Snow-covered bases can completely change the atmosphere of a fantasy miniature. A warrior standing on ordinary brown dirt tells one story. Put that same warrior on frozen ground surrounded by snow, ice, and frost, and suddenly the miniature feels like it belongs in a dangerous northern wilderness. Winter bases work especially well with frost giants,…
Wood is everywhere in fantasy miniatures. Shields, bows, staffs, barrels, crates, doors, carts, weapon handles, buildings, bridges, dungeon furniture, siege equipment, and miniature bases can all contain exposed wooden surfaces. Yet wood is often painted as nothing more than brown paint with a lighter brown dry brush. That approach works from a distance, but realistic…
Feathers and wings can become some of the most impressive parts of a fantasy miniature. Angels, griffins, harpies, birdfolk, demons, celestial warriors, giant eagles, dragons, and countless other fantasy creatures use wings as major visual elements. Because wings often occupy a large percentage of a miniature’s silhouette, painting them well can completely transform the finished…
Bronze and copper are some of the most interesting metals to paint on fantasy miniatures because they offer much more color variation than ordinary steel or silver. Ancient armor, statues, shields, weapons, machinery, temple decorations, coins, jewelry, and dungeon scenery can all benefit from bronze or copper finishes. Better yet, these metals can develop patina…
Poison, slime, acid, and toxic ooze are some of the most visually striking effects you can add to fantasy miniatures. They work especially well on monsters, undead creatures, mutated beasts, dungeon bases, poisoned weapons, swamp creatures, alchemists, demons, and corrupted environments. A small amount of bright green slime can immediately transform an ordinary miniature into…
Crystals and gemstones are some of the best details for adding color, contrast, and magical energy to a fantasy miniature. They can appear on wizard staffs, enchanted weapons, treasure, jewelry, armor, dungeon scenery, magical creatures, and bases. The interesting part is that you do not need transparent paints or actual transparent resin to create convincing…
Ghosts and spectral creatures are some of the most visually unique miniatures you can paint. Unlike ordinary characters, spirits don’t need to follow realistic skin, armor, or clothing colors. Instead, the goal is to make the miniature appear transparent, supernatural, and illuminated from within. The biggest mistake when painting ghosts is simply covering the entire…
Werewolves are some of the most visually interesting creatures to paint because they combine several miniature-painting challenges in a single model: fur, exposed skin, claws, teeth, muscles, leather, and dramatic facial features. The fur is usually what determines whether the finished miniature looks convincing. A common mistake is treating fur like ordinary hair and covering…
Lizardfolk are fantastic miniatures for painters who want to combine organic skin, scales, strong color variation, and detailed fantasy textures. Unlike dragons, lizardfolk usually have a mixture of small scales, softer skin, larger armored plates, and distinctive facial features. This gives you the opportunity to create several different textures while still keeping the miniature visually…
